Applications for the EAGR Summer Research Program will be due on February 19, 2024 at 5:00pm Eastern Time.

Student Eligibility

Must be a sophomore or junior at UConn (Storrs) to apply (expected graduation in May 2025 or later).  Must be able to commit to 10 weeks of full-time Summer research in 2024 (should not be enrolled in Summer courses).  In exceptional cases, applications from freshmen may be considered.

Timeline

Nov 2023 - Feb 2024 Students identify eligible faculty mentors and host lab projects (see participating labs)
Jan - Feb 2024 Students are welcome to contact Dr. Ken Campellone (kenneth.campellone@uconn.edu) to discuss their research interests. Questions about potential advisors and possible projects may also be directed to Dr. Campellone or to individual faculty mentors.
Early/Mid Feb 2024 Students compile application materials
February 19, 2024 All application materials due
Late February 2024 Applications reviewed by EAGR leadership committee
Late February 2024 Online interviews with EAGR leadership
Early March 2024 ~5 EAGR Scholars selected
Late May 2024 2-week Geroscience methods workshop (at UConn Storrs and UConn Health)
June-August 2024 8-week Laboratory research experience (at UConn Storrs or UConn Health)

The EAGR Scholar application consists of a 5-6 page PDF.  Additional letters of support are optional.

Describe why research in the field of geroscience is meaningful to you, how you are qualified to pursue this project, what you hope to learn, and how completing this project would impact your professional goals.  Include any past experiences or research training that prepared you for this endeavor, and any additional background information that would help you benefit from this opportunity.  Identify 1-3 potential faculty mentors from the Participating Labs whose research interests you the most.

Pages 3-4  Resume or CV  (2 page maximum)

Summarize your education, training, and employment background in a standard resume or curriculum vitae.

Pages 5-6  Unofficial Transcript

Generate a PDF from Student Admin and incorporate it here.  Do not provide screenshots.

The above materials must be combined into single PDF and emailed to:

by 5:00pm on February 19, 2024.

 

Letters of support are welcomed but not required.  Any letters should emailed as PDFs to: geroscience@uconn.edu with a subject line of “EAGR letter” by 5:00 pm on February 19, 2024.

 

NOTE:  Applications to other Summer research programs (e.g., UConn SURF, UConn Health HRP, UConn IDEA Grant, UConn McNair Scholars), are encouraged!  Many EAGR faculty members and host labs participate in multiple undergraduate research programs – students may apply for these other awards at the same time as the EAGR application.  While an EAGR Summer Fellowship stipend cannot be disbursed concurrently with any other stipends, transportation and/or housing may be coordinated among programs.

Criteria for Review and Selection

All UConn EAGR Grant applications will be reviewed and evaluated by UConn faculty with relevant expertise.  Preference will be given to applicants who:

  • Clearly articulate the impact of the work for both the student and the geroscience field
  • Possess a strong academic record
  • Display a genuine interest in research
  • Identify potential mentors to guide their work
  • Propose original ideas related to a research project
